iOS app

The rChat iOS app provides a native, end-to-end encrypted messaging experience.

  • iOS 16.0 or later
  • A deployed rChat server
  • The server WebSocket address (e.g. wss://your-server.com)

Install rChat from the App Store or build and run via Xcode.

In Settings, enter your server WebSocket address:

wss://your-server.com

Your identity key enables end-to-end encryption.

In Settings → Identity, tap Generate Identity. The key is stored in the iOS Secure Enclave and never leaves your device.

Tap Publish Key to upload your public key to the server. This allows other users to find you and start encrypted conversations.

  1. Tap the New Chat button
  2. Enter your contact’s identity key (a 64-character hex string) or scan their QR code
  3. The app performs an X3DH handshake automatically
  4. Once the session is established, send your first message

  • End-to-end encryption — Every message is encrypted with the Double Ratchet
  • Secure Enclave key storage — Private keys never leave the hardware security module
  • Auto-reconnect — The app reconnects automatically when network conditions change
  • Delivery receipts — Know when your message has been delivered
  • Media messages — Send images and files (encrypted before upload)

  • Verify the server address is correct and includes wss://
  • Ensure your identity key is generated
  • Check your server is running and accessible
  • Verify the contact’s identity key is correct
  • Ensure the contact has published their key to the same server
  • Try starting the conversation again
  • Enable Background App Refresh for rChat in iOS Settings
  • Check for iOS updates
  • Verify your server is stable
