macOS app
The rChat macOS app provides a native, end-to-end encrypted messaging experience for desktop.
Requirements
Section titled “Requirements”- macOS 13.0 (Ventura) or later
- A deployed rChat server
- The server WebSocket address (e.g.
wss://your-server.com)
1. Install the app
Section titled “1. Install the app”Install rChat from the App Store or download the binary directly.
2. Configure server
Section titled “2. Configure server”In Preferences, enter your server WebSocket address:
wss://your-server.com3. Generate identity
Section titled “3. Generate identity”Your identity key enables end-to-end encryption.
In Preferences → Identity, click Generate Identity. The key is stored in the macOS Keychain and never leaves your device.
4. Publish your key
Section titled “4. Publish your key”Click Publish Key to upload your public key to the server. This allows other users to find you and start encrypted conversations.
Start a conversation
Section titled “Start a conversation”- Click the New Chat button
- Enter your contact’s identity key (a 64-character hex string) or scan their QR code
- The app performs an X3DH handshake automatically
- Once the session is established, send your first message
Features
Section titled “Features”- End-to-end encryption — Every message is encrypted with the Double Ratchet
- Keychain key storage — Private keys are stored securely in the macOS Keychain
- Auto-reconnect — The app reconnects automatically when network conditions change
- Delivery receipts — Know when your message has been delivered
- Media messages — Send images and files (encrypted before upload)
- Keyboard shortcuts — Navigate quickly with familiar macOS shortcuts
CLI alternative
Section titled “CLI alternative”Power users may prefer the rChat CLI for terminal-based messaging.
Troubleshooting
Section titled “Troubleshooting”“Failed to connect”
Section titled ““Failed to connect””- Verify the server address is correct and includes
wss:// - Ensure your identity key is generated
- Check your server is running and accessible
“Session not established”
Section titled ““Session not established””- Verify the contact’s identity key is correct
- Ensure the contact has published their key to the same server
- Try starting the conversation again
